Auto-closing initial blank document

I really like the feature in office where if you open the program (such as
Powerpoint) and then open a file, it automatically closes the initial blank
document that appears when the program launches.

Somehow--and I don't know how--I have managed to disable this feature.

So when I open up PowerPoint, I get a blank document as expected, but then
if I immediatly open up "My Presentation.PPT", the blank document stays open.

Can someone tell me how to fix this?
