Auto created outlook quick launch

Default behavior of Outlook 2003 is that when a user starts Outlook for the
first time Outlook is added to the Quick Launch bar.
Is there any way to disable this behavior?
I know the Quick Launch entry can be deleted from the users profile but it
shouldn't be created in the first place.
Thanks in advance.

I don't know of a way to prevent this but I have to ask why you want
to do something like this. If I were one of your users I wouldn't be
too thrilled with you wanting to remove my shortcuts from my Quick
Launch bar. ;-)

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email can not be acknowledged.

Beth,

Our environment consists of Windows 2003 Terminal Servers, CPS4 and RES
Powerfuse.
The applications are being published and controlled on the Citrix user
desktop by Powerfuse.
This means we can centrally configure registry settings, mappings, file
associations etc. to the published application.
The Outlook behavior to put an icon in quick launch causes the the ability
for the user to start Outlook in the standard way, not controlled by
Powerfuse.
The user has an Powerfuse application which is called Powerpanel to
configure a part of his/her desktop. In this app the user sees the list of
applications published to him/her. The user can take the following actions
for each app: Automatically start after logging in, place shortcut on
desktop, place icon on quick launch, etc.

So you see the user still has the ability to start Outlook by using the
Quick launch icon, but it has to be in the Powerfuse controlled way.

I just don't understand why Microsoft doesn't give the ability to configure
the option of automatically creating the Quick launc icon.

Hi Merl,

In your environment are you deploying from an Office Admin point using the Office Customization Wizard from the MS Office 2003
Resource Kit (http://microsoft.com/office/ork/2003) ? Using that tool, the MS Office for deployment, you do have the ability to
configure shortcut installations.

If you are using the setup properties have you set a 'do not install' shortcut for Outlook in screen 13 fr the Outlook icon using
the default setting of
<ApplicationData>\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

Bob,

Thanks but that won't work.
We've used the cusomization wizard and the shortcuts section is completely
empty.
We don't have any shortcuts configured in the MST because the shortcuts are
created by Powerfuse.

Hi Merl,

Did you add the Outlook icon to the separate tab to not create an icon, in this case specifically the icon on the quick launch bar.
(I'm not at a machine with Office 2003 where I can experiment with this and I'm trying to recall if that was the method or using the
delete registry key page was what pulled it out).

Hi Merl,

In the custom installation wizard for Office 2003 if you select item '13 of 24' (Add, Modify or Remove Shortcuts) that dialog should
have two tabs. One for 'installed' and one for 'not installed' shortcuts.

The checkbox at the bottom of the dialog will determine if a created shortcut is a normal 'windows' shortcut or a registry only MS
Installer shortcut.

========
Thanks Bob but I can't find a tab where that can be done >>
