Is there as way in office 2007 to force word/excel to always save in the
2003 format by default? Is there a registry key or something I can modify?

Thanks,
Joe.

Conversion

Some people want to keep using the older version of Office but are concerned
about working with others who have the new version of Office. To help smooth
this exchange, Microsoft is offering a compatibility pack design to give
users of the old versions of office the ability to open Word, Excel, and
PowerPoint 2007 documents. To download and install the Microsoft Office 2007
Compatibility Pack, browse to
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/products/HA101686761033.aspx and follow
the instructions online.

Saving

Office 2007 users can help make sure their documents are compatible with
others' software in two ways. The first way is to manually save each Office
2007 document as the older version. To do this, select the Office button
(shaped like the Windows logo), choose "Save As", and select the older
version of the application in question.

The second way is to change the settings on Office 2007 to always save every
document as the older version. This choice limits all documents to the
feature set in the older versions of Office, but ensures that every document
created is compatible across computers without having to manually change the
version of each document. To change this setting, select the Office button
and click Office Word Options at the bottom of the panel. Then select "Save"
and change the document format to Word 97-2003 in the drop-down menu. It
will be necessary to make this change in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
separately.

Yes. In Word 2007, click on Office Button | Word Options | Save | Save
files in this format: Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc) | OK. There is a
similar option in Excel 2007.
