Auto format in Word

I am looking for a way to turn off auto format in Word. I find it distracting and annoying that I have to keep going to undo action each time I change from one part to another in my document. The auto correct check box does not have any effect on this, contrary to what "Help" tells us. Has anyone got any ideas?
