Auto Numbering Problem

I've got a freaky thing happening with a document that uses the auto numbering feature. This is not a document that I created, so I can't tell you why this is happening. But the section goes from 5.2.8 to 5.2.10, then continues to repeat 5.2.10. When I try to change it, it changes the whole document numbering to 5.2.10. Does anyone have a clue how to fix this?

Yes. You have multiple lists in that document.

Up to 5.2.8 is all one list. 5.2.10 is starting a new list. That list has
a "start at" value set to 5.2.10.

The following paragraphs are all starting new lists at 5.2.10.

The fix to this is to apply the SAME list throughout the document.

Re-apply the style (NOT the numbering!) to ALL of those paragraphs and it
will all come right. The style brings in the numbering format for you.

Cheers
