auto-numbering

Hey,

I'm using a heading style that uses Word's automatic numbering. It the
first section of my document, I could control+click on the numbering
and select "restart numbering" when I needed it to go from 1 again. But
in the third section, the "restart numbering" tool has no effect.

Any ways of getting it work again (I need it to be auto-numbered
because I have a TOC) would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Spee.

I have seen that sometimes. Here is a trick that works for me.
In the section where restart numbering does not work, add a dummy
paragraph in the numbered paragraph style. Then add another numbered
paragraph after the first. Restart numbering will work on the second
paragraph. Delete the dummy paragraph.

Quality control? They've heard of it!

Hi Spee:

No. By design, Heading numbering (Heading styles) will NOT restart
numbering. There can be only ONE heading list in the entire document.

You can have up to nine heading levels, using the nine built-in styles
Heading 1 through Heading 9. But you cannot restart the numbering in any of
them. You can set the "Start At" value of the first paragraph in the list
(to have a document start its numbering at something other than "1") but you
cannot restart within the document.

You're thinking of LIST numbering (List Number styles 1 to 9). You can
restart numbering for those.

If you ever wanted to restart such lists you would have to use any style
except a Heading style: the Heading styles have special properties to
prevent the numbering being restarted.

Hope this helps
