Auto Page Numbering in a Footer

In some Word Documents the field {PAGE} returns a zero on all pages, in others the field {NUMPAGES} returns the page number instead of the total number of pages. The occurrences are occasional, in most documents the numbering system works well. The two problems do not appear simultaneously, it is either one or the other. Is this a fault or am I doing something wrong?

Thank you for pointing me to the MVP site - it is a very useful reference I had not previously discovered.
I found the solution to the problem of the field {PAGE} returning a zero.
For the other problem, the article entitled 'Page X of Y gives the wrong numbers' states that the 'Page X of Y Bug' does not affect versions of Word beyond 2000. However, the problem is appearing in XP. Some further guidance please on this, if possible.

Although the problem was supposed to have been solved by SR-1 for Word 2000,
and most Word 2002 users do not see it, there are still some reports of it
in Word 2002. AFAIK, a solution has not been presented, but you can try the
workarounds listed in the article.
