Auto recovery of Excel file when error occur

J

Julie

Good day everybody,

When an error occurs which prompts the computer to immediately close the
program with an active file without the option for user to save, sometimes
the file can still be recovered and saved later. But at times, whatever
unsaved information is lost. Is this dependent on the type of error which
occurred? Is there a way I can ensure recovery of the file in such situation,
if I do not want to activate the AutoSave function?

I hope some one have the answer for me.
Thanks in advance and have a wonderful day.

Best regards,
Julie

You might have a backup macro assigned to a button and click it often.
Sub Backup() 'kept in personal.xls & assigned to toolbar button
On Error GoTo BackupFile
MkDir CurDir & "\Backup"
BackupFile:
With ActiveWorkbook
MyWB = .Path & "\BACKUP\" & .Name
.SaveCopyAs MyWB
.Save
End With
End Sub

First of all.......which version of Excel are you using?

The answer to your question is dependent on that information.

Excel 2002 and 2003 have an AutoRecovery feature that you can set to save at
timed intervals. If Excel crashes, when you re-open Excel you are offered a
choice of versions to Recover.

Earlier versions had an AutoSave which overwrote the current file at timed
intervals. If you were lucky and Autosave had made an over-write just before
the crash, your file wouldn't be too out-of-date.

In addition to the above......Jan Karel Pieterse has an addin called AutoSafe

It doesn't overwrite the existing workbook when it saves. It saves to a user
selectable folder. And when it's done, it either deletes these backups or
puts them in the recycle bin if user chooses that option. And the user can
always restore the backups from the recycle bin.

(look for AutoSafe.zip)
