Auto send/Receive not working

Using Outlook 2007 with an Exchange 2003 mailbox.
Under Tools - Options - Mail Setup tab, I have 'Send immediately when
connected' unchecked & have 'Schedule an automatic send/receive every 5
minutes' checked.
When I create a new message and hit send, it goes into my Outbox as expected
but never sends automatically in 5 minutes. I have to manually click on the
'Send/Receive' button to send.

Please assist.
