Auto spell checker

In the 'Tools' and "Options' menu the auto spell checker in 'check spelling as you type' is enabled. . Auto spell checker working fine.
When I close WORD and open it again, the auto spell checker does not work, although it is still enabled in the options.

Windows 2000 SP4 with Office 2000 pro

Is the default language of the document the same as that selected for the
spell checker?

is still enabled in the options.One possible explanation would be that there's a language conflict: that you have a
Windows Input language selected that's not activated for Office. When you look at the
status bar, what language is displayed for the current selection?
