auto tab

I need to type 1 letter or number in a cell - and excel knows to "auto tab" to the next cell to the right.

not possible (or only with some not very robust constructs). Reason:
macros are not executed while in Edit mode

You could hit enter after entering the info in the cell and set Excel to move to
right upon enter

Tools Options Edit Check by move after enter and select Right

Or you could use a small userform that only accepts one character.
