Auto Text Doesn't Work in Word or Outlook (email)

I had a corrupt normal.dot recently. Ever since I deleted that file, Auto
Text doesn't work. I can see my auto texts still has my custom blocks of
text. But when I'm in Word or writing an email in Outlook (with Word as my
email editor), I never receive a prompt to click enter for automatic. How
can I switch this prompt back on?

When you recreated Normal.dot did you allow Word to create the new
Normal.dot or did you create a template and save it as Normal.dot? If the
latter then only Word can create a correct Normal.dot and that may be the
reason why AutoText isn't working.

If that's the case, rename your current Normal.dot to OldNormal.dot and if
you have custom AutoText entries you can copy them to your new Normal
template using the Organizer found under Tools/Templates and Add-ins.

I had 2 similar Autotext definitions. When I deleted the rarely used
definition, the prompting started to work again. I guess Word is a little
particular here.

Ah! So the problem was for only one AutoText entry, as opposed to all of
them. (that's a very helpful detail. ;-) )

Yes, in order to use AutoComplete the first four characters must be unique.
If they aren't then you need to type up to the first unique character before
the AutoComplete tip appears.

Note that you can name them anything you want, first type it in a document,
select it, go to Insert/AutoText/New (or press Alt+F3) and assign your own
name for the entry.
