Auto text error

Kim T.

I recently wrote in the 'community newsgroup' about my
auto text giving me an error msg only when the "show" box
is checked. You suggested renaming Normal.dot. Can you
please tell me how to do that?

Thank you!

Assuming Windows XP, make sure that all applications are closed then open
Windows Explorer and navigate to Documents and Settings>username>application
data>microsoft>templates and right-click on normal.dot, select Rename and
change the .dot to .bad so it reads normal.bad. If the are any ghost copies
of normal starting with a ~, delete them. Close and restart Word.

Note that in Explorer, View Options you must clear the check box to hide
extensions and registered files.

In regards to your message, I am not using Windows XP, I
using Windows 98 and I tried to follow your instructions
but there is nothing under Documents and Settings (even
when I unchecked the hide files box.)

Use Windows Explorer and use its Search for normal.dot. Then rename it when
it finds it.

The path to Normal.dot will be the path shown for User Templates on the File
Locations tab of Tools | Options. But it is not so much the Windows version
as the Word version that is significant. In Word 97 and earlier, all Word
templates are in a single folder and subfolders; in Word 2000 and above,
user templates and installed templates (those that ship with Word) are
segregated.
