auto update fails

I have Word 2004 for the Mac version 11.2 installed on a Mac mini
running MacOS X 10.4.10. Autoupdate fails. It tries to update itself
first, but hangs as soon as installer vice starts. I have tried
various other word updates, but either the installer hangs, or
complains that it could not find the correct version of the software.
This is nonsense, of course, because I have a working 11.2 install
(student version). I am thinking this may be an issue due to Intel
Core Duo. Anyone have an idea?

Damn! I can't remember what causes this...

You say you are at 11.2? OK, download the 11.3.5 Service Pack from the
Microsoft site and run it. That will bring you up to 11.3.5.

I would then go on and apply 11.3.6, 7, 8, and 9 while you are there ‹ they
have to be done in sequence.

Then you will be fully up-to-date, and I believe you will fix your
AutoUpdate problem along the way.

Hope this helps

The 11.3.5 Service pack fails with the following message:
"The installer could not locate the correct version of the software
required for this update. ....

That *usually* means that the Test Drive version is still on the computer
(or was removed without running the Remove Office Tool), or that something
has happened to the Microsoft User Data folder...

It's been a while, but I do remember having real trouble with the
original installation. I think the machine did come with a Test Drive
version of the software which I had to remove. Maybe I should remove
everything using the Remove Officce tool and do a fresh install of
11.2 first, then try update again.

Where is the microsoft user data file located?I may well have messed
with it or even deleted it when I had my earlier installation
problems.

Thanks!

Yes, I would suggest running the Microsoft Office Remover Tool TWICE to make
sue it gets the whole thing.

Then re-install, and apply all updates 11.3.5 and higher BEFORE you run any
of the programs.

The Microsoft User Data folder should be in your user Documents folder. If
it's not there, the installation will create it on first-run. If it is thee
but it has the wrong contents, you get this behaviour.

It can have the wrong contents if you have been running Entourage and have
updated Entourage. Entourage upgraded the format of the database in one of
the updates.

After that has happened, the original version of Microsoft Office
Applications which is on the CD ROM cannot read the MUD Database, and you
get this condition that you have.

Hope this helps
