The only 2 ways I can think around this is to either :
1. Have an "empty" symbol in every cell (such as a simple "."), so tha
the column is not broken all the way down.
2. Write a list of every possible variable and then *hide* the rows
Then leave a space for a "true" data-entry cell. Then re-paste the lis
and hide those cells again. And repeat.... Of course this would lead t
massive spreadsheet (albeit hidden) and make exporting data prett
messy
So I think I'm stuck with leaving a recognised empty symbol in ever
column.
