AutoComplete seems to stop working if any cell above is enpty.

Is this normal and is there anyway round this?

It's normal.

From XL Help ("Microsoft Excel doesn't always display the AutoComplete
list."):
Active cell is outside the current data region:

Check the location of the active cell; it may be outside the current data
region. For example, if the data region is the range of cells A1:E10,
Microsoft Excel displays the list when data is typed in cell A11, even if the
cell A10 above it is blank. However, Microsoft Excel does not display the
list when data is typed in cell A12, because that cell is outside the data
region.

The only workaround is to extend the data region (the region that
contains data and is bounded by empty cells or worksheet borders).

Is the data region the area which contains data because if this is s
then there still seems to be a problem i.e. there is data in cell A1
but if there is no data in C9 then C10 doesnt display autocomplet

Take a look at help for data region. It's a region bounded by empty
cells or the worksheet boundary. If B10 is empty, C10's having data is
irrelevant.
