Autofilter problems in Excel 2003

I am having a real issue with autofilter in Excel 2003. I have had it
since I first installed the upgraded office version after a machine
rebuild. This particular spreadsheet was created on 2000 if that makes
a difference and it has other sheets which have autofilters on them,
although I have had it on others too.

I can set the autofilter all OK and then I can use it to filter on
maybe one or two occasions with the added extra of the blue triangle to
tell me which columns have a filter applied BUT THEN.....

I get to a stage where no matter what I do I get no options when trying
to change the filter options. This most often happens when I have
filtered to show only one person, to show only the pupil whose
coursework I am in the middle of marking. Turning the autofilter off
and back on makes the problem worse as I then loose the blue drop down
triangle. I have to unhide the rows to get back to the start.

Marking 200 pieces of coursework over the Easter 'Holiday' is bad
enough but with Excel not playing ball it is making it just that little
bit worse. I hope someone can help.
