Autoincement field reverts to Number after Tabledef is edited.

I have a problem with the autoincrement field when using DAO3.6. I can
create an autoincrement field in the table and it all works OK. If I
then edit the table to add a new field the autoincrement field will
revert to a number field and stop counting.
The code (VB6) works fine with DAO3.51 So I think there must be some
differences I do not know about in updating requirements. Normally it
is impossible to change the autoincrement field.
Has anyone else had similar problems?
