Automated 'My tasks' updates from "My Timesheets" in PS2007

PedroJose

I have had a nightmare trying to explain to my company the fact that in
Project Server 2007 the timehseet updating process DOES NOT automatically
update tasks progress, that you have to import timehseets into my tasks.
They are now two separate apps.... Does anybody know a way to automate this
process? an add-on to automate this process? a future way to automate this
process? a workaround? a third party software? a set-up that automates this?
etc etc etc???? Is MS working on providing an automated link between the
two, maybe in SP1?

How have you guys gotten around this? any experiences that show it is not
really an issue? supoorting data???

Please help.

Pedro Jose:

Do you need to implement timesheets? This is the question that you need to
ask, because you can enter time on projects through the My Tasks page and
never touch the timesheet system.

Time and Attendance systems really have nothing to do with Project
Management. So, why did Microsoft see fit to add this feature? Because
people wanted it. What does Microsoft know about time and attendance? Very
little. How much time did they have to build this feature? Very little.

The fact is, if you have a genuine need for time and attendance in your
organization, this is not the product for you. At best, consider timesheets
in Project Server as a "starter kit." There are dozens of companies out
there who have developed T&A systems over decades, so even with Microsoft's
mighty muscle, it will take them quite a while to catch up. Plus, there are
a number of good robust systems out there that integrate well with Project
Server.

Just because its there, doesn't mean you have to implement it. It is
certainly possible to write additonal code to move the time into the My
Tasks page, but what do you gain? Very little. People react negatively to
the two-step process because they haven't really considered the challenge.

Gary, thanks for the response. Although we don't have to use it, we would
really like to implement it as it provides a very nice, all tasks in one view
page, where time can posted easily to multiple tasks and see that I have
posted my '40 hrs'. I know we can enter time directly to the my tasks view
from where progress is automatically tracked, but, it requires resources to
open each task individually (what if I forgot to open one) and because there
is no consolidated view, I may forget one task, resulting in unreported time.
It would be perfect if I can use the My Timesheet view to enter all my time
to '40 hrs', hit a button and know that my manager got all of it. So,
without having to custom code it, is there a way to make it a one step
process?

Thanks again!
