Automatic assignment of tasks to Project Server Users.

Greg

I created a project plan using generic resources. After publishing the plan
to Project Server 2007, I replaced the generic resources with actual people.
However, all of the tasks are assigned to me and show up in My Tasks (I am
one of the resources assigned to the project), but not in the "My Tasks" for
the other resources. When I published the project with the actual people
resources, I had expected the tasks to be assigned to the people and show up
in My Tasks for each. What do I need to do?

Second question...I have also created a project workspace for this project.
I noticed that the workspace has a tasks list. Can the tasks from the
project plan fill in the project workspace task list automatically?

Your Project Server administrator missed a huge critical step in setting up
Project Server 2007. He/she must specify the Default Assignment Owner value
for every resource in your Enterprise Resource Pool. For each resource,
he/she must set the Default Assignment Owner field value to the name of the
selected resource. For example, the Default Assignment Owner value for
Mickey Cobb is Mickey Cobb. The system uses the value in this field to
determine whose PWA Timesheet gets the tasks when a PM publishes a project.
He/she will need to do this editing in the Resource Center page as the
system will not allow him/her to specify this value by opening the
Enterprise Resource Pool in Project Professional 2007.

Also, to force the current project to work correctly, you can insert the
Assignment Owner field in the Task Usage view and specify a value for each
resource. Hope this helps.

Dale -- Thanks for the response.

The Default Assignment owner is actually set up correctly for each of the
users; however, it didn't properly assign the assignments. Could it be
something else?

You need to read the rest of my message: "...to force the current project
to work correctly, you can insert the Assignment Owner field in the Task
Usage view and specify a value for each resource." Hope this helps.

I have the same issue however I am not able to change the Assignment Owner
Field. I am the MSP server administrator but the option is grayed out, not
changable for me.

Precisely HOW are you trying to change the value in this field? Are you
opening the enterprise project and then inserting this field in the Task
Usage view? And are you then attempting to change the value for the
resource assignment and not for the task? Also, if you are the Project
Server administrator, why haven't you specified the Default Assignment Owner
value for every resource in your Enterprise Resource Pool? I realize that
you probably did not know to do this, but failing to do this creates a world
of pain for your PM's. Let us know how you are attempting to change the
Assignment Owner field in the project.

Hi Dale thanks for the assistance, I open the project file, select the Task
Usage View or Gantt View or Resource Usage View, add the Assignment owner
field, try to change the value from the publisher to the resource assigned to
the task. The box will not allow me to change the value.

Re: the Default Assignment owner, I did an AD sync and brought all our US
users into MSP as resources however the Default Assignment owner field did
not populate, it only populates if you create the resource by hand manually.

So I then Manually assigned each resource (3000 of them) as their own
Default Assignment owner.

Tried to change the value for Assignment owner to the file online, saved it
offline, both will not allow me to change this value.

The project in question was put onto the server prior to any resources
having a Default Assignment Owner. Additions were made to the project file
and then Default Assignment Owners were assigned to all resources user
accoutns however we are not abel to change the Assignemt owner for any task.

I'm fressh out of ideas, as I cannot duplicate your problem. Perhaps
someone else has an idea. Sorry I can't be of more help.

No problem Dale, even I am scratching my head looking at it. The user has
recreated the plan and started over again and everything is looking ok.

Thank you again for the assistace, your quick help and suggestiong are quite
helpful.
