automatic backups

Hi,
Any help would be appreciated.

When we open any excel spreadsheet, and it is in use for longer than
minutes, a new file is automatically created under a backup file name.

We have checked the AUTOSAVE feature and it has not been installed no
is there a AUTOSAVE add-in.

We have been hit with a overflow of backup files, which you have t
manually delete. We don't know how or why this started. Nor how to tur
it off.

Again, any help from the Experts, would be appreciated

Tools>options>Save
don't suggest unless you have a macro to do it yourself. There are MANY
posts on "how do I recover a file I wrote over",etc
