automatic bread crumbs?

Is there a way to have powerpoint generate an automatic border that indicates
progress in a presentation, like:

Topic 1 >> Subtopic 2 >> Sub-subtopic 1

It is nice to have an indication of "where are we" during (especially long)
presentations, and it is a pain to build these cues manually, since they are
fragile (have to redo them when you re-organize your presentation).

If you organise your presentation into "sections" and use eg a plain red
slide (set to hidden) as a section marker and then use a different master for
each section (with the required text) it's easy to rearrange the slides into
sections . Use the red slides as a guide shift click to select the whole
section and right click the correct master > apply to selected slides.

This made a lot of sense but how do I do this? I can make several masters
but how do I apply any to a particular slide(s)? I feel pretty dense.
