Automatic copying

Sometimes results appear in blank cells without me having to copy them from
above. For example if I have some data in columns A & B and then put two
formulas in columns C & D, inserting data in the next blank A & B row
magically puts the results in C & D without me having to copy the formulas
from above.

Other times there is no magic and I have to use the pan-handle.

Can anyone explain this mystery to me?

It sounds like you are talking about the Autofill feature. You type enough
unique characters that match the cells above it and automatically fills the
rest.
Autofill does not work as often as some of us want. It does columns from
what I have seen and not across rows. And if you jump down 100s of lines it
seems to shut off because it is looking at close cells in the column.
An MVP might disagree.
