automatic layout

Hi,

I am using visio version 10 (2003) and to the best of my knowledge I
haven't meddled with any advanced preferences, but I am continually
frustrated at the automatic layout.

Often it seems to choose a connection point on completely the wrong
side of the object and route the line all the way round rather than
routing to a connection point on the side the line is coming in from.

Often it crosses lines when there is no need to do so (for instance if
there are two lines coming into the bottom of a box, one from the left
and one from the right, it will quite often have the connection points
swapped over so the lines have to cross.

also when it puts labels on lines they are sometimes a long way away
from the line and often situated on top of other labels or boxes.

I am only an occasional visio user so I would be interested in finding
out any hints from "power users". I mostly use it for UML but it seems
to happen for other drawing types too.

This is a repeat of a post I made 6 months ago but got no replies.

many thanks

Andy
