Automatic "Mark as Read"

Is there a way to set the length of time that I can view a message in the
preview pane iwthout it being automatically changed to "Read" when I click
to another message?

Certainly, but you'll have to state your version of Outlook for a definitive
answer.

OK, then, click Tools>Options>Other>Reading Pane and change the length of
time a message is displayed prior to marking it as read. You can even
disable marking it as read.
