Automatic merging of documents

i received a document attachment via outlook. I opened it but did not save it. Then i was sent a revised version of the same document but this time the filename ended with the new revisiondate. When i open the revised document (with a slightly different filename), i got the old document's content. This happens with Word and Excel documents. Please advise

I am using Microsoft Office XP.

Are you absolutely certain the content of the file is different? I've never seen
anythign like this... If this is happening generally with attachments you're
getting through Outlook (not just Word docs), then try asking in an OUTLOOK
newsgroup.
