Automatic non-breaking space and phone numbers

Word 2003 automatically changes a regular space to a non-breaking space when
it detects a phone number. I want to turn this feature off, because it does
not work properly. Inspite of my efforts, I have not find the place to turn
the automatic non breaking space feature off.

Maybe someone here could help me, please!

I am unaware of any feature in Word that turns a regular space into a
nonbreaking space in phone numbers or anywhere else, so you must have some
add-in that is doing this.

Could you try with these examples (note the spaces and grouping of digits)

040 123 456

040 123 456 789

12 000 euros

There should be changes, if you have the same feature that I have now been
encounterd with on three different Windows XP/Word 2003 systems.

It doesn't matter what sequence you try - unless you have autocorrect set to
modify these specific numbers, Word does not change ordinary spaces to
non-breaking spaces by itself. Incidentally non-breaking spaces in phone
numbers are no bad thing.

That is my point: where do I do it?! Not in any of the ordinary places, I
have tried everything.

I agree. The problem is that the automatic change is only semi-automatic, it
sometimes works fine and sometimes not.

If the phone numbers would always contain digits in groups of three,
everything would be fine, but that is not the case. In Finland, we have phone
numbers like 040 123 4567, and in this case the automatic change does not
work.

The whole thing is related to Windows' regional settings, but the solution
to the problem cannot be found from there.

It may have to do with the fact that you evidently have defined a space as
your thousands separator (instead of the comma or dot used elsewhere). That
being the case, Word is inserting a nonbreaking space between groups of
three digits.

That is true, space is the standard thousands separator in Finland and I do
not want to change that in regional settings.
Word is inserting a nonbreaking space between groups of
three digits.

But is there really no way to take this feature off in Word?

Mind you, Word 2000 does not change the spaces, even though the thousands
separator is set to a space. All other automatic changes can be turned off. I
am begging to suspect, that this one really cannot, which is very annoying.
