automatic numbering

How do I stop automatic numbers to appear on a second or third page of a
document with a new numbered list? Example: Page one has a numbered list
then page 3 has another numbered list but the numbers continue.

With Word 2003, assuming numbered list tool (similar to the bulleted
list) is used:
Right click on the first element of the new list, and you get the
options of "restart numbering" (from 1) or "continue numbering" (from
previous list).

(As I don't have English Word version I'm not sure of the exact wording
of the options, but you'll figure it out. It probably works similarly in
other Office versions.)
