I get a message that a certain .msp file is now not present. Any suggestions
as to how to correct the problem would be greatly appreciated.

I can't help but I'de be interested in the solution, I get the message
"Windows Installer patch files (.MSP files) from previously applied Office
updates are missing from the \Windows\Installer hidden directory on your
computer" but nothing more specific than that

The link I provided applies to your version of Office. Did you click on
the link, read the article, and attempt the suggested solution?

Sorry, I understand. I have downloaded the file but have not run it yet. I
need to know if running it will make me lose all of my contacts, calendar
events, etc., that I have in Outlook. Thanks very much for your help and
patience.

The Windows Installer Cleanup Utility does not delete any of your Office
files. It only deletes the Windows installer files related to whatever
applications you tell it to. But before applying any major Windows or Office
service pack, you should probably make a complete system backup just in case
Something Bad happens.

Thanks, Garfield-n-Odie. I tried using it but still not working. I removed
only the files associated with Microsoft Office 2003, no others. Should I
have removed more? Thanks again for your help.

What are the exact error messages you're seeing?

The following screen appears:

Office Update is unable to check for updates Help

The Office Update site is unable to check for updates on this computer. This
may be happening because of one of the following reasons:

You do not have administrative privileges for this computer.
There is a network problem and the detection catalog used by the Office
Update site failed to download. Go back to the Downloads home page and try
running detection again.

Windows Installer patch files (.MSP files) from previously applied Office
updates are missing from the \Windows\Installer hidden directory on your
computer. MSP files are stored on your computer after update installation
completes because they need to be referenced for future update operations. If
the files are missing you will not be able to apply Office updates. You may
also be unable to uninstall Office products as a result of the same problem.
Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for assistance.

You installed Office updates in the past and then upgraded from Windows
Installer version 1.0 to Windows Installer version 1.1. For more information
see the KB article "Windows Installer May Prompt for Install Source if
Unavailable."

Search for Office updates in the Download Catalog

Report the error to Microsoft

Hmmm... the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility usually fixes this error
for me. Would you happen to have Visio 2003 installed on your computer?
What other Microsoft applications are installed, other than Office
2003?
