automatic sequential numbering

Can anyone please explain, if it is possible, using Microsoft Publisher office XP, to number a slide show, of still photographs, by "automatic sequential numbering ", rather than numbering each slide individually. Thanks in anticipation !

First things first, a Publisher document is normally referred to as a
"publication" - slide shows are what PowerPoint is normally used for.
The "slides" as you call them, if I get your meaning correctly, are
traditionally referred to as pages.

Now, there was no Publisher included with Office XP (unless you struck it
lucky). The version of Publisher that was included in a very few copies of
Office XP, and was released at the same time as Office XP, was Publisher
2002. Each program in Office XP is called (Program) 2002, nor (Program) XP.
So you have Word 2002, PowerPoint 2002, etc. making up Office XP. Don't ask
me why Microsoft did things that way, but they did, so we have to tag along.

Now, to your question.
You can use the Master Page in Publisher 2002 to add page numbers.
To go to the master page, press Ctrl-M on your keyboard (press the Ctrl key
down, tap M, then release Ctrl - there's no need to try to press and release
both in synchrony, as I have *very* often seen people doing)
Now, create a text box on your master page. Set the font, size, etc. to
your preference.
Then go to Insert > Page Numbers.
Now, to go back to your main document, press Ctrl-M again.

The same small child you refer to, ran all the way to harry's home and said
" look! look ! a reply from Ed Bennet, Wow " !

Harryh says, thank you Ed !.

Your reply is being carefully read and inwardly digested.

Seems to be quite a few points here that need looking into

To clear up one point , my project involves scanning still photos and getting them onto DVD's as a slide show, with transitions and background music, hence my referring to them as slides and not pages.

Never looked at Power Point before and never heard of Master Page in Publisher.
Learning curve is getting steeper by the minute. Got some investigating to do here

Thanks once again.............

Transitions, background music and that ilk are a feature of PowerPoint.
Publisher is designed for print publications, and to a lesser extent web
publications.
PowerPoint is designed for the type of thing you are talking about (among
other things)
I seriously suggest you check PowerPoint out - it will make your life much
easier :)

I think so. I don't use PowerPoint that much, so I can't be sure.

Is there a way to do outline numbers automatically in Publisher as I do in
Word, for instance: Level 1 (I), Level 2 (A), Level 3 (i), etc.?
