Automatic switching between the line/arrow tool and the pointer

Up until recently, my OneNote was set up so that whenever I selected the line
tool or arrow tool, and drew a line or arrow, OneNote would then
automatically switch back to the default pointer so I could go back to typing
or resizing objects. It doesn't do that anymore - when I draw a line or
arrow, the line/arrow tool stays selected, and I have to go and click the
"Type Text or Select Objects" button to go back to the pointer.

I must have changed some setting, but I can't work out what or where it is.
Can anyone help?

If I understand you right, then it's

Tools, Options, Pen, 3rd option.

.

Unfortunately I've tried that, but it hasn't worked - the option is already
checked! I select the checkbox, click OK, exit OneNote (as the program
suggests), then re-open, but nothing happens.

Does this suggest something has gone wrong with my OneNote installation?

Mmmmmhh ...
I tested it on my ON again and it worked, checked or unchecked ...

I'm afraid I'm of no further help ;-)

Thanks for trying, but I've worked out what happened! The little button with
three stacked rectangles in the drawing toolbar was selected. Its tooltip
just says "Duplicate shapes", but what that really seems to mean is, "Keep
drawing the same shape until I select something else."
