automatically insert current date

Is there a way to insert current date in a cell without
changing the date of cells from previous days? When I
open a worksheet and insert info in a row I want the date
column to reflect the current date that I entered info.
If this is not possible I would like to know that also so
that I can quit racking my brain!!!
