Automation - which way round?

I have an Access table that is refreshed by a make table query activated from
a 'Confirm' button on a form. I have created an Excel PivotChart based on
the Access table and I want the Excel workbook that contains it to open after
the tabvel has been refreshed. However, I get an error indicating that the
database is still open.

Can I run the query and then open the Excel workbook from within Access?

Yes. That's called Automation.
