Autonumber field goes crazy

Hi,

We've got an Access 2000 DB, two of its tables giving trouble:

Each table is about 20.000 records long, and eahc have an autonumber field,
with the only purpose of giving a unique record identifier. Well, this field
suddenly goes crazy and begins to repeat values, something thats
theoretically impossible.
The only and easy solution is to delete the field, and create it again, but
it'd happened again. It seems it's caused after compacting DB, but i don't
know why. In almost ten years working with Access, it's the first time i see
this weird behavior.

Does anyone knows what's causing the error, and how to avoid it?
