Autonumbering

I am working on a procedures document which requires
different levels of numbering. It is being developed in
tables. I have found that the automumbering feature is
not working consistently. I have set styles for each
level of the number/letter format. The numbering is not
consistent. For no reason it will be numbering
sequentially and then skip a number or two. If I select a
style for the second level format, it doesn't include the
letter and it indents twice as far as I have set in the
style.

I am spending way too much time fighting with the
autonumbering feature. Is there any way I can turn that
feature off and insert the numbers/letters manually?

Hi Cindy:

Tools / AutoCorrect / AutoFormat As You Type
Clear the checkbox for "Automatic numbered lists"

You might as well clear most of that screen -- the only
one I like most of the time is "smart quotes"

To clear out existing auto numbering, Ctrl+Q and/or
Ctrl+Shift+N (Normal style) applied to those paragraphs,
ought to do the trick.

The key to autonumbering is to define your outline as an
interconnected entity -- Shauna Kelly has instructions at
her self-named website.
