I have a few formulas which are five or six lines long as they take
information from various other worksheets. However, whenever I click on a
cell at the top of my spreadsheet, the formula appears in a sort of drop
down way, and so I can no longer see what information is in that cell now
can I format cell etc..... as the cell is blocked by my formula box.

Any way I can change my options so that it only shows one line or something
else similar?

Have not heard of any setting that would prevent this.

Work-around could be to enter a Windows>Split at say A5. Select your cell
with the long formula in the lower part of the split window. The text in the
formula bar would cover just the top part of the split window.

I know it's clunky but what else?

View > [uncheck] Formula Bar. Formulas no longer visible at all, but all cells
can be seen and formatted.
