They go in whatever folder you specify when the Embedded Files dialog box
appears.
For example, if you add a picture to a page, then auto-thumbnail the
picture, then save the page, the Embedded Files dialog box appears, asking
where to save the thumbnail. That's where it goes.
The default naming convention, BTW, is to add _small to the filename base.
For example, the thumbnail for picture.jpg would be picture_small.jpg.
Perhaps this will help you find them.
