AutoUpdate 2.1.1 always indicates it is still required.

I just installed AutoUpdate 2.1.1 with no apparent issues. When I do
"about AutoUpdate", the version number is correctly displayed as
v2.1.1.

When I verify (Get Info) the AutoUpdate in /Library/Application
Support/Microsoft/MAU.2.0, the app is shown as v2.1.1.

So far, so good.

But if rerun AutoUpdate, I am advised that I still require v2.1.1.
Reinstalling it did not help.

Now, I fear I may be precluded from installing future updates.

I have shut down, Safe Booted, Repaired Permissions, and run the full
suite of Cocktail, all to no avail.

Confusion reigns. Thoughts, guesses, and musings all welcome.

It sounds like you have 2 separate copies of AutoUpdate on your system -
v2.11 & one more.

Use Spotlight in a Finder window to locate the prior version. Also, don't
bother to run AutoUpdate as a separate application. Instead, use Help> Check
for Updates in any Office app & let the program choose which to run - it
will most likely opt for the latest.

Bob, I did as you suggested, but no joy.

When mucking about with Spotlight and File Buddy, I noted that I have
Office 2008 on several (other) volumes and drives. Could AutoUpdate be
pulsing on those yet to be updated copies of Office 2008?

The auto updater in Office 2004, when finding more than one copy of
Office, always asked where you wanted the installation. Even though I
did not get such an alert in Office 2008, it was worth the effort to
unmount all my other volumes and drives, and then (re)run AutoUpdate
(from the Help menu of course). Bingo! That was it. And all is again
sweetness and light.

My many thanks to you and the other MVPs.

I'm running Leopard in an Intel iMac 2Ghz. AutoUpdate downloads and then pops up to tell me that "adminstrator or greater privileges are required to install", with only an OK button available. This stops the update. I'm not prompted for my admin password at any point, and the same thing happens when I am signed into my admin account.

Any ideas? I don't want to be shut out of future updates.

That happened to me as well.

I downloaded the upgrade from MS' website and manually
installed it and it quit complaining.

I manually downloaded it, double clicked on the disk image, then the icon, and the same thing happens.

Then you need to do as it says: Login to the computer as the Administrator.

If you believe you ARE an administrator on the computer in question, then
try using Disk Utility to repair permissions on the boot drive.

The patch is trying to run the Apple Installer program, and your computer
either won't let the installer start, or will not allow the installer to
write where it needs to.
