AutoUpdate doesn't appear to successfully update 2.1.1

T

Tracey

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

AutoUpdate says 2.1.1 update is critical, however it doesn't seem to be able to install the update.
After choosing to download, entering my password, & quitting other programs it seems to check for updates again. The process repeats until AutoUpdate shuts down.
I have looked in "view installed updates" and nothing is recorded.

As repeated attempts failed, I downloaded updates 1210 and 1211 from microsoft.com/mac manually.
I then tried again to use AutoUpdate to install 2.1.1 and was again unsuccessful.
I recently bought this mac and am not very experienced using computers for anything other than surfing the net.
What should I do?
Thanks,
Tracey

The "installed updates" has been removed so you definitely are not updated.

Run the Apple combo updater first. This will repair any OS files that might
be corrupted. It requires a restart. After restarting Repair Permissions.
(See below)

Combo updaters will install on the same version as they¹re applying‹no need
to roll back or do a clean install.

Leopard:

Mac OS X 10.5.4 Combo Update (For both PowerPC- and Intel-based Macs)
<http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1054comboupdate.html>

Next....

* Quit all Microsoft applications (Easy way: log out/in with Shift key down
to disable any startup items.)
* Drag the Microsoft Office 2008 folder to the Trash.
* Empty Trash.
* Reinstall Office 2008 from your original installation disk.
* Restart
* Update
* Restart (restarting before you launch any app is important!)
* Repair Permissions

You might want to look over this page first. Includes lots of screenshots.

Install Office 2008
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/install/install_office2008.html>

To use Repair Permissions:
1. Open Disk Utility in your Applications/Utility folder.
2. Click on the First Aid tab and select Repair Permissions
3. Click on the icon for your boot volume.
4. Click the repair permissions button.

Don't run from CD. Updates contain a newer versions of the application's
permissions.

Cheers and Welcome to Mac! I have a few tips and links posted to help new
users here:

Autoupdate install 2.1.1 is looping. We are having the same problem with every machine on our campus.

Running Permissions fix with the Mac OS X install disk is NOT going to fix a permissions issue with a Microsoft installation. Mac OS X Permissions Repair can only reset permissions to known settings based on the CD you are booted from. Repair Permissions is largely a myth, a catch-all, in the list of "things to try" if you're having a problem.

We can't get to the 2008 SP1 12.1.0 and 12.1.1 updates through Autoupdate and will have to install these manually from downloads from MS website.

sy Is correct. Permissions Repair will only set your Permissions back to what they are for that installation disk - which can be a bad (or at least misleading) idea if you happen to be running 10.5.4 and are using a 10.5 Leopard install disk, or perhaps even a Tiger 10.4 disk.

I'm confused. This thread was started by Tracey and had similar problems.
Why do you think adding your problem to this thread without giving all
details a way to find an answer?

Mixing problems in the same thread makes it harder for users to search for
an answer.
