AV and FrontPage

Hi,

I am about to buy a new PC that will be used purely for FP
webdevelopment and publishing.

The PC will be on 24/7 connected to an ADSL (Broadband)
line.

I want to know what is a good Anti-Virus program to use so
that my machine will not be attacked from outside in by
hackers/viruses and also will work prefectly and trouble-
free with FP.

Thanks,

skc

I use nothing. I just don't do anything that could possibly get me a virus.

I use the free AVG from www.grisoft.com as my AV program and use a NAT router as
my firewall.

Unless by "I just don't do anything that could possibly get me a virus"
you mean you don't surf the net, read email, or ever download files from
the net, that's not a very safe or responsible strategy these days. A
much better way is to use ALL of the following:

1. real-time antivirus protection with automatic updates
2. a decent firewall, also with automatic updates
3. regular scans for spyware

The good news is that you can get all of these for free if you're on a
limited budget:

1. AVG http://www.grisoft.com
2. ZoneAlarm http://www.zonelabs.com
3. AdAware http://www.lavasoftusa.com and Spybot Search & Destroy
http://security.kolla.de

I like Norton AntiVirus and Norton Personal Firewall, personally, and
both of these seem to function happily with FrontPage 2002.

Interesting, David. I don't "surf the net" but I certainly DO read email
(not SPAM), and download files from sites I know about, and no others.
However, I can tell you that I never get a virus, and I do check from time
to time (about every six months). I also don't run any firewall. Using (not
"surfing") the Net is certainly something which can be done without getting
a virus, if you know how. Reading email is also something which can be done
without getting a virus, if you know how. And downloading files is something
you can do without getting a virus, if you know how. I know how to do all of
them without virus protection software, or a firewall.

Normally I'm a HUGE Norton fan however there are known issues between Norton
and Publisher. I use AVG and have been very pleased with it.

There are issues with Norton and XP too.
Unless you have 512 mb or RAM with XP, Norton will eventually cause XP to lock
up and require a reboot.
About twice a day.

Hmm, never heard that. I don't have 512 but I do have XP Pro. Doesn't
matter, I like AVG.

On my home machine, I have 384 MB ram, Norton AV 2003. Never, ever had a
problem. Never, ever had to reboot.

Never had a problem when I started with 128 MB of RAM. Now, Zone Alarm,
that's another story. Dumped it like a sack of hot potatoes.

Office Machine: XP Pro..using Symantec Corporate Anti-Virus (norton)..no
probs on any of the machines we have in the office.

it's odd how the same os on different computers will do different things
with the software that is loaded. I've never had a problem (other than
inexperience caused) with zone alarm.

I use no AV apps, as I have a dual network environment, and I do not accept HTML email or open any
files with attachments, unless I am expecting to receive one from a specific individual.

Now with that said, I just located a nice AV app that can be set to only scan incoming email and not
my HD automatically, as the problem I have is with AV apps always running in the background scanning
my HDs.
