AVI clip properly inserted in Powerpoint turns blank

I inserted avi clip into powerpoint slide. Instead of playing
normally when clicked on (or when I go to presentation) it goes
blank. The clip is good It plays normally in Windows Media Player

Is this happening on the computer's main screen or the projected screen? If
it is a projected image (second monitor or LCD projector) the problem is the
video card you have in your computer. It doesn't have enough "power" to
drive the computer's screen and the projector/2nd monitor screen. To remedy
this, you need to make the 2nd monitor or projector the primary video
device. On a laptop, press and hold the FN key while pressing the F key at
the top of the keyboard that causes a shift in the monitor. They will
rotate from internal monitor, both monitors, external monitor, once with
each keypress. For a desktop with remote video, you need to right click on
the desktop, click on properties, then click on settings. You need to then
click on whatever control you have to shift the position of the monitors
from 1 to 2 and 2 to 1.

If this is happening on a desktop computer's main monitor, please check for
latest video drivers for the video card in the computer. I have seen a
similar problem with "low end" video cards on desktops.

Video and PPT can be complicated, because PPT primarily relies on the
antiquated MCI Media Player to handle media files.

For troubleshooting, I'd start by going to Start|Run and typing mplay32.exe
If the AVI plays in that player, it should play in PPT.

If it plays in the MCI Media Player (mplay32.exe), but not in PPT, then
check here: http://www.echosvoice.com/tshoot_video2.htm

If it doesn't play in mplay32.exe, it's not gonna play in PPT.

Personally, I'd get PFCMedia (there's a link to it on the troubleshooting
page), let it convert the file, and be on my merry way. PFCMedia has a free
trial period -- 10 days or 2 weeks or something. Trust me, that will be
much, much easier than fighting with it.
