.avi files won't play in Powerpoint

Have you updated your video driver? I would start there. Most video card
manufacturers frequently release updated versions.

The other thing to do would be to go to Start > Run and type mplay32.exe.
The MCI player will open. Locate your video file and see whether it will
play. You'll have to click on the "play" icon to start it. Since
PowerPoint uses the MCI player, this is the acid test.

I recently installed WindowsXP and then re-installed Office 2000 on both

my home and work computers. I now have the following problem ONLY at work
but not at home:

Powerpoint allows me to insert .avi clips, but when I try to play them in

slideshow mode, the object box turns white and nothing plays. Of course, the
..avi files are in the same folder as the Powerpoint file. I have been using
Powerpoint for years, and have never encountered this problem before. The
Microsoft support site suggests several solutions (e.g. inserting the movie
as a Media Clip or a Windows Media Player control object) but these don't
work well and are tedious.

The MCI player opens and plays the clip. However, even after updating the video card driver, the problem persists. I'm very frustrated, and have a big presentation next week.

It sounds to me as if you need to repair your installation of Windows. MCI
is a component of Windows. You might want to post a question about this in
one of the Windows newsgroups.
