My version of power point does not seem to have the above file format for
importing images into a presentation.
Our company computer experts have restored the program 3 times now and out
of 1000+ computers in our organization I'm the only one with this problem?
Any ideas?

Which version of PowerPoint are you using? I use the Insert Movies and Sounds
form file, when I'm working with AVI files.

AVIs are videos, not images. Have you tried Insert > Movies and Sounds > Movie
from File?
