There are situations where they are appropriate, and even beneficial.
Usually if the pages are part of a multipage process such as a form or a
long document of some type.
I would tend to agree with you that they can be overkill. I'd say that in
most cases, a good navigation element, such as a toolbar, makes most back
buttons redundant.
