Back into Excel?

I'm experiencing the same problem--a hard crash requiring restart by
holding the power button down. I'm using the latest macbook pro 4,1.

My question is: my crash log lists word rather than excel as the
culprit (same message, however). Word has been functioning perfectly
so far. Is this relevant difference?

The crash happens everytime I attempt to open the same excel file
(which worked as recently as last week). When I try to open excel
now, it automatically goes back to the same file--is there a way I can
get back into excel with a new spreadsheet?

Try opening Excel with the shift key down.
