Using FrontPage 2002 and PowerPoint 2002 on Windows XP
this is what I did with the picture of an old building. I
inserted a JPEG into PowerPoint, formatted it as a washout
(85% brightness and 15% contrast), saved it as a JPEG with
another name and used it as the background of a table cell
so that I could type text over it. In FrontPage I selected
the cell and then chose Format Borders and Shading >
Shading > Background Picture > No Repeat > Scroll. I had a
LOT OF TROUBLE. Selecting the entire table did not work. I
had to do a LOT of adjusting of sizes for the picture and
the table and the text. Finally I formatted the background
of the web page with a sort of nondescript color to blend
in with the picture. It looks good now in Explorer 4+ and
Netscape 4+. It was a major project! I did another much
easier page with the whole background covered in a washout
version of scattered stars of various sizes - a GIF I
created in PowerPoint. That one tiles but looks good
because you don't notice that it is tiling. All I did was
choose Format > Background > Background Picture.
Incidentally I think some degree of washout is preferable
because it doesn't detract from the text. You can also get
really creative and put one picture on top of another!
Finally I have nothing but trouble with Netscape 4.7 but
always test in it to find the glitches! Hope some of this
helps.
