background and graphis not displaying

I am trying to do background coloring for a text box. It shows up when
printed but not on display, which makes it difficult to edit. What do I need
to turn on/off so I can see backgrounds on display?

Go to Control Panel | Display | Appearance and make sure you don't have one
of the High Contrast schemes selected.
