Background Transparent

Is there anyway to make the background picture slightly transparent? I have
a Layer that is the size of the displayed webpage. The layer contains this
picture.

OK - tell me, how large should that image be on my browser?

The point is, you have no way to know how my browser is set. You can
measure my screen resolution, but you cannot determine my browser's viewport
width/height until it is too late to do anything about it.

Trying to "fill the page" with an image is likely to be wrong more times
than it's right, with the added problem of what's bound to be a large and
heavy image.

See what I mean?

Good advice. Actually the original background was only 37k. When I did the
washout, I did if from a copy and forgot to make it small again.
Anyway, I will give all these suggestions a shot.

1: Washout the cowgirl image

2: Optimize the cowgirl image - it's WAY too big 121K - get it down to like
20K...it'll still look good

3: Change the BG to white (or sample the white of the cowgirl image).
(IOW...dump the gray bg).

see if you like it then.

I read this with interest.

My website http://tandcl.homemail.com.au/ originally had a background
picture http://tandcl.homemail.com.au/images/04-08-24-1-Bird-bath.jpg but it
is large at 409 KB. Try as I could, I could not seem to reduce it any
further.

I hear the word optimise, but what does this mean? I have Adobe Photoshop
Elements, Microsoft Picture It! 2002, Kodak EasyShare (which probably
doesn't have an editor - I have never looked for one), IrfanView, JAlbum.
The disks which came with my scanner (Canon) and printer (HP) may also have
some relevant software.

So far, all I have been able to do is reduce the number of colours, and wash
out the image somewhat, but no real difference

Can someone give me some clues

When you select the JPEG format, you should see a Image Quality or similar setting, the higher the
number (quality), better the quality, but also a larger file size.

I can't seem to make the face more transparent. What graphics tool would
work better. I use Picture It to blur the edges, therefore, her face is
still colorful. I have many different graphics package on my computer but
still can't figure this one out.

Any other Ideas for making the center more transparent?


in message I think it looks better...but I think you can washout the cowgirl even
more..the blue text is hard to read in places.

MS Image Composer is on the FP98 CD and the FP2000 Standalone version, CD #2.

I can't find a reference to your site, but I note that you have Picture It!

In Picture It!, open the picture, and choose the following
Photo & color effects
Color or texture
Transparent fade even ...

Here you get a slider which you can vary from 0 to 100% (which is pure
white)

The odd thing I have found however is that this does not reduce the size of
the image.

I have been trying for some time to reduce the size of a background image on
my site with little success. I have read the advice "optimise" many times
but can't find how. Thomas A Rowe referred me to some sites, but I didn't
get much joy out of them - one called JPEG Compression Wizard OnLine (or
some such) returned "Site not found".

I will keep trying, as no doubt will you

Yes I have IrFanview and I use it. I'm not worried about the file size
because just about all graphics packages allow you to resize. I just want
to get the washout (or semi-transparent) look first before reducing the
size.

Note: IrFanview does not have an option to make the picture transparent.

in message washing out won't necessarily decrease the file size.
Download IrFanview - its free - and extremely easy and versatile....you can
use it to convert image files and also optimize them for web.

Not sure where you sent the picture. Can you try again. You may have to
zip it, but I did not get a picture.

i just sent you your image...washed it out by 50% and compressed it to 15K
(left it as a jpg) - see if it works for ya.
