Backing up email in Outlook Express 6

Good morning, I need to erase my hard drive to get rid of
some gremlins and I want to save my files and emails for
re-installation. I can't figure out how to "archive" my 5
years worth of emails so I can bring them back after the
operating system and applications are reinstalled. I found
the .idx .mbx .dbx and Outlook.pst files but they are so
tiny that I don't understand how they could possibly be
everything I need. Help! TB
