I copy/paste mine into excel. Just don't select all of the columns in the
view, when you try to copy the data.

Backing up the database backs up the resource pool. The easiest way to
backup to file is simply open the Resource pool, then do a Save As mpp file.
If you want to backup the enterprise field values, you'll need to create
corresponding custom resource fields in the file and copy the Enterprise
values column by column. Setting up the custom fields takes a few minutes
depending on the quantity and copying them takes another minute or two.
Saving to mpp file preserves all of the data if you do it correctly.
